Star Wars: Rey Kenobi & Darth Maul

A credible fan theory is the one where Rey is a Kenobi. It sells you on two points. First, Rey and Ben are the only ones in Star Wars with a Britishy British accent. And two, Rey’s meddling in Starkiller Base resembles too much that of Old Ben in the Death Star. The Force Awakens is filled with conscious references and winks and this one sounds too masterful to be plain coincidence.

But this is not the blog’s point. Let’s assume Rey is indeed a Kenobi. Though consider this. What if she is not just A Kenobi, rather KENOBI. Different discussion, not for now.

Let’s look at her design, see what we can come up with. She is a melee fighter using a staff weapon. Why on earth would a concept art team come up with such an odd choice for our sci-fi world? There are many answers, but the most reasonable one is to have her use a saber staff later on, with some credibility as to why she’s so good at it. “Cause she already knew how to use a quarterstaff.” If she does get to use the iconic saber staff, we can attribute that to the influence of Knights of the Old Republic and Bastila Shan.

Yet we all remember the first time we saw this dreaded weapon.

Consider the repercussions now of a Kenobi using the iconic weapon of the Sith Lord that Kenobi himself sliced in half. Perhaps these two factors (Rey’s heritage and weapon of choice) are no coincidences. It is highly possible that the story will eventually push Rey to the hands of Maul. For training? Does Luke send her away at some point in Episode 8? Is he reluctant to take her down a road that leads only to suffering, as proven by his fallen former apprentice Kylo Ren? A lost Rey Kenobi would be ideal for Darth Maul to take under his tutelage to corrupt and defile. It would be the ultimate revenge to the Jedi who mutilated and humiliated him. Obi Wan was the reason Darth Maul fell as a Sith Lord, reduced to a lingering monstrosity as seen in the Clone Wars series. Corrupting and subjecting Kenobi’s progeny would be Maul’s triumph.

And closing, here’s a video of the spectacular Chloe Bruce, the stunt who performs Rey’s action acrobatics.

Convinced yet?
