Guardians of the Galaxy and the Lobo Film

Back in March, Dwayne Johnson tweeted about his involvement in DC's cinematic plans. The net roared over the long overdue Lobo film. Yet ever since the Rock hinted Shazam and later confirmed Black Adam, Lobo has been forgotten once more.

Aside all that, we're closer to a Lobo film than ever. The answer is simple.

As of today 9/29/2014, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has grossed $644.3 Millions on a $170 Million budget. No idea what the marketing budget has been, but Guardians sure proved to be one mean tentpole success. The question is, what will DC and Warner Bros make of this?

No Jokes

While it's rumored that all new DC films will steer clear of Green Lantern bombed humor, Shazam has been clearly stated to be its own kind of fun movie. This allows room for versatility. One thing's for certain, Lobo can't work in the Man of Steel atmosphere of the upcoming DC cinematic universe.

Yet this is where Guardians and Marvel come to offer the answer. According to Nicole Perlman, screenwriter of Guardians, when Marvel offered her the job, the directions was "Don't worry about the rest of the universe, make Guardians its own movie". This is the one answer that will compromise the two polar opposites: Lobo and the new Justice League. While it helps to drive interest from one film to the other, this can be a double edged sword. Lobo's creator, Keith Giffen, also the creator of Guardians' Rocket Raccoon, came up with Lobo as an indictment to his generation of super-heroes. Lobo was to make fun of all that. So it's by default wrong to place Lobo in a realistic and gritty franchise. It'd be sabotaging the whole multi-movies JL endeavor. Therefore the answer is simple and unambiguous. Keep Lobo separated.

When?

Marvel began on Guardians back in 2009. So, if ever, a Lobo movie is a long way down the road. If the notion was greenlit this summer, that's at least four movies away: Batman V Superman, Shazam, Justice League, Aquaman.

Yet the real question in the minds of all Lobo fans is, "which Lobo version??"
